Name of Project: RESPECT Programme
Lead Partner: Londonderry YMCA
Grant Awarded: £74,193
Londonderry YMCA has been successfully developing and delivering this exciting and innovative programme, engaging 40 Sports Clubs across the Council areas of Derry, Strabane and Donegal. Its main aim has been to build and develop an understanding and acceptance of the Good Relations issues within sport and an engagement across sports to strengthen peace building at a grass roots level.
The programme has targeted low capacity, grass roots sports clubs in a developmental process that has increased their confidence and capacity, and focused on improving attitudes among young members of sports clubs on issues of sectarianism and racism. Participants undertook a range of Good Relations training, alongside Child Protection and First Aid training, thereby qualifying them to support the safe delivery of sporting activities within their clubs.
The programme has also provided opportunities for clubs from different traditions and cultures to engage in a developmental learning process, with them also participating in a series of Hub Development sessions aimed at building and developing relationships, and encouraging the shared use of club facilities, which has enabled them to increase their future sustainability.
Clubs that successfully completed the RESPECT Programme were presented with a bespoke designed Club training kit to the value of £600, along-side pitch hoarding emblazoned with a specially designed ‘RESPECT’ logo, highlighting that they have signed up to the ethos of RESPECT.
The Legacy Celebration Events Programme is a project supported by the European Union's PEACE III Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body and delivered by the North West PEACE III Partnership of Derry City Council, Omagh District Council, and Strabane District Council.
